Opening celebration for Sredzki 44 – affordable and livable, dude!

The multigenerational living model house Sredzki 44 is a housing project realized by the Berlin tenants’ cooperative SelbstBau eG that enables communal, age-appropriate, and inclusive living. The residential building at Sredzkistraße 44 in Berlin, built in 1901, was renovated and adapted for older residents, offering current and future residents affordable space for self-determined living, social participation, and social contact.
The result is 11 barrier-free apartments (3 of them fully accessible for people with disabilities) and an information and exhibition center with a model apartment on the ground floor. The latter gives interested visitors insights into age-appropriate, communal, and intergenerational living and building, and also serves as a common room for residents’ events and meetings as well as a guest apartment. An architectural competition, run by the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning in cooperation with the cooperative and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, ensures a well-thought-out, needs-based conversion as well as innovative concepts for the information and exhibition center. The center’s media concept and the implementation of its information technology were carried out by Schaltzeit GmbH – itself a happy tenant of SelbstBau eG.
The model project received substantial support from, among others, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, and so State Secretary Dr. Ralf Kleindiek attended the opening on September 14, 2017. Besides thanking the many supporters, the opening event was above all an occasion to explain the renovation work and the architectural concept to guests and to tour the building.
