Stories convey the role models, narratives, worldviews and values through which we make sense of the world. Not only our understanding of the present and the past but also our ideas about the future are therefore strongly shaped by stories. At Schaltzeit, we deal every day with different images of the future, their implications and also their underlying conditions. Taking a look at the deeper worldviews that shape these images of the future is therefore especially valuable for us as well. Last week, we hosted a workshop in which we and some smart guests practiced reflecting on visions of the future in a structured way using \u201cCausal Layered Analysis\u201d (CLA). Put simply, it is about the way we understand the world and, accordingly, how we imagine the future. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-18eb97e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"18eb97e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe goal of critical futures studies is to uncover these underlying (seemingly self-evident) perspectives and make them explicit so that they can then be put up for discussion. The motto: I can only question internalized assumptions once I have first become aware of them. This uncovering is also called deconstruction. In everyday language, the term \u201clitany\u201d is also used pejoratively for an endless list or monotonous chatter \u2013 so it refers to widespread, undifferentiated statements about the future (which not infrequently have a fear-mongering, dystopian character).<\/li><li><strong>Systemic level: structural analyses of future topics<br \/><\/strong>The second level, just below the water\u2019s surface, deals with the systemic-structural level and sheds light on the social, economic, cultural and political causes. For anyone with a nuanced interest in a future topic, this level is easily accessible \u2013 through specialist literature and scientific findings.<\/li><li><strong>Worldview level: the underlying worldviews of discourses<br \/><\/strong>For the third level, you have to dive much deeper; appropriate technology \u2013 which images and myths did we deconstruct, and what were the critical thoughts?<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f0e0ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9f0e0ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As an introductory example for the CLA evening, we looked at the role of Musk\u2019s tech visions and the idea that future humanity will spread to Mars.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e5ee185 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e5ee185\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li>The litany here would be, for example, headlines about SpaceX rocket launches, plans for future Mars missions or statements by Musk himself about a \u201cmultiplanetary\u201d humanity, but also the fear of our current planet being destroyed and the related threat to the foundations of our existence.<\/li><li>On the structural level, one can look at the concentration on individual tech giants as central players in the tech industry and emerging tech oligopolies, as well as at government funding or influence in politics and business.<\/li><li>At the worldview level, by contrast, we discussed the extent to which tech utopianism leads people to cling to the belief that technological progress will solve the pressing global problems \u2013 with technologies driven mainly by a few central actors rather than shaped collectively.<\/li><li>Underlying this is the idea of the archetypal inventor genius, a heroic tech pioneer who saves humanity with brilliant innovations thanks to his willingness to take risks, his courage and his strong sense of mission \u2013 someone like the charismatic and brilliant Marvel hero Iron Man. On the one hand, we analyzed the de-extinction vision of Colossal Biosciences, which aims to reverse the extinction of species through genome reconstruction and bring extinct animals such as the woolly mammoth, the Tasmanian tiger (thylacine) and the dodo back to life. The litany would therefore include the threat to ecosystems and fear of the resulting consequences for humans. De-extinction is meant to save ecosystems with the help of genetic engineering.<\/li><li>On the systemic level, scientific findings on ecosystems and keystone species were addressed, as well as the destructive effects of climate change on them.<\/li><li>The worldview we identified is that science is able not only to understand ecosystems but also to repair them. Elements of transhumanism were also identified, and there was speculation about a possible hidden agenda.<\/li><li>As underlying stories, we saw, among others, the Christian image of humans interfering with creation and playing God, but also the Matrix metaphor.<\/li><\/ol><p>An exciting consideration during reconstruction was whether and to what extent tech visions change if the underlying story is instead based on the Gaia hypothesis, understanding the Earth (Gaia) as a self-regulating system. If you change the metaphor to \u201cMother Earth\u201d who \u201chas a fever,\u201d it becomes questionable whether artificially reviving individual animal species can heal the system. Its litany is the demand that all users should have the freedom to use the system and to view, modify and share the source code.<\/li><li>On the systemic level, we named the competitive struggles and market logic of big tech players as well as the principle of open-source licensing.<\/li><li>The worldview thus seems to be strongly based on user sovereignty and collective ownership of knowledge\/code \u2013 combined with a critical view of the power of large capitalist software vendors.<\/li><li>We associated this with stories of dominant powers and rebellious countermovements (Empire vs. underground fighters). As a metaphorical image for open-source code as a decentralized, self-evolving construct of knowledge, the network of a fungal mycelium came up: a structure that branches out widely, takes on a life of its own and absorbs nutrients \u2013 or new knowledge \u2013 in many different places. As a pop-culture counterpart, the plant world of Avatar came to mind, where plants are connected by fine networks of fibers and function like a large decentralized neural network that holds knowledge everyone can share in.<\/li><\/ol><p>In the reconstruction, we found it hard to come up with new images; interestingly, we could hardly think of a story without a power struggle as its central element.
