The TCL initiative builds on a petition for mandatory CO\u2082e labeling of food, signed by 57,067 citizens and debated in 2020 by the Petitions Committee of the German Bundestag. Alongside Paul Hoffman-Woldt, head of the TCL initiative, expert input came from consumer researcher Dr. Anke Z\u00fchlsdorf and life cycle assessment expert Dr. Ulrike Eberle.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-97ceb62 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"97ceb62\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe focused entirely on the question of how consumers can make conscious choices about their consumption. Since they cannot collect this data themselves, they need trustworthy information to do so. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-90beed9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"90beed9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Credible labels can provide a reliable basis for decisions<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91d3f94 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"91d3f94\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>That is why Paul Hoffman-Woldt presented the prototype of the CO\u2082e label on July 6, 2023. The goal is not just to work with a traffic light, but also to display a CO\u2082e score. This lets consumers see at a glance who produces in a more climate-friendly way. They would find products in the same categories and could also compare different values for summer tomatoes vs. winter tomatoes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7a31f9a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7a31f9a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTCL\u2019s prototype CO\u2082e score is designed to have the following features:\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd39302 elementor-icon-list--layout-traditional elementor-list-item-link-full_width elementor-widget elementor-widget-icon-list\" data-id=\"dd39302\" This means they need labels they trust and can grasp quickly.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ea9336 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5ea9336\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt is fascinating to see how many layers and how much complexity this subject holds. Everyone stressed that there is now a \u201cwindow of opportunity\u201d for Germany to lead by example: \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f84551 important to learn from pioneers such as the Agribalyse database in France, and from Denmark.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fal fa-minus\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">Uniform calculation models are needed to enable targeted action.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fal fa-minus\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">Trust in labels is crucial, so we must fight greenwashing.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fal fa-minus\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">A level playing field, transparency and traceability are needed to create an industry-wide standard in the food industry.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fal fa-minus\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">Publicly accessible databases should be available free of charge to all companies, including small businesses.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLife cycle assessment expert Dr. Ulrike Eberle pointed out that this is not only about steering consumption, but rather about enabling companies themselves to identify and mitigate emission hotspots within their production and supply chains. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6b31553 that value-conscious consumers will no longer let themselves be fooled. After all, broccoli from Ecuador can be considerably more climate-friendly and carry a better CO\u2082e score than broccoli from Spain. End consumers often don\u2019t know that transport and packaging account for only about 5% of emissions in food production. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6934c6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6934c6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt is especially encouraging that policymakers have recognized the need for action and can now build on what the consortium has already achieved.
